/ HOME / DEPT. OF ACTUALLY RUNNING THINGS / THE WESTMINSTER PROTESTER
Brian Haw has been camped out in Parliament Square since 2 June 2001, and he’s not on some kind of bizarre Eurocamp holiday. No, Brian Haw is busy staging the longest one-man protest in British history. In fact, he’s been there so long that it has become his official address and he even receives his post there.

Why is Brian so unhappy with his leaders?

He says: "I want to go back to my own kids and look them in the face again knowing that I've done all I can to try and save the children of Iraq and other countries who are dying because of my government's unjust, amoral, fear - and money - driven policies. These children and people of other countries are every bit as valuable and worthy of love as my precious wife and children."

Brian truly believes in what he is doing and no one can doubt that he is having an effect, as he has become a major political embarrassment to the British Government. They tried to evict him through the law courts, in 2002, but the judge ruled in his favour: Brian was exercising his right to freedom of speech. This wasn’t what his government wanted to hear, so they decided to change the law.

So the British Government have introduced the Serious Crime and Disorder Act which will allow the Home Secretary to apply a 1/2 mile exclusion zone around the Houses of Parliament. Not only will the act allow the police to set strict time limits on activists within the exclusion zone but it will also allow them to ban placards and loudhailers. Brain Haw is well known for his placards and beration of passing MP’s with his loudhailer.

After meeting Brian I made a vow to myself - I want to make sure I never caused any of my citizens to be so disillusioned with my leadership. As someone once said, with great power comes great responsibility!

Will the British Government finally manage to get rid of Brian? Find out how he is getting on by visiting his website.
